In Belgium, protection against RSV (respiratory syncytial virus, VRS in French) runs through three products depending on the situation: a vaccine for adults from 60, a vaccine during pregnancy and an antibody, Beyfortus, for babies. None of the three is free.

All three are reimbursed by INAMI/RIZIV under conditions (for adults, only one of the two brands), with a co-payment of 12,80 €, or 8,50 € with increased reimbursement. Those conditions differ from the recommendations of the Superior Health Council and are often narrower; some of the dates only hold for the 2026-2027 season.

Key takeaways
  • Adults: the Superior Health Council recommends the vaccine from 60 with a risk factor and for everyone from 75, but INAMI/RIZIV reimburses only Arexvy, from 65 and under conditions.
  • Pregnancy: Abrysvo is reimbursed between weeks 28 and 36, if the delivery is expected during the RSV season and after approval by the mutuality’s advisory doctor.
  • Babies: Beyfortus is an antibody, not a vaccine, and it is not given to every baby at birth; its reimbursement depends among other things on whether the mother was vaccinated.
  • Public prices read at CBIP/BCFI on 10 October 2026: Arexvy 191,84 €, Abrysvo 186,36 €, Beyfortus 613,86 € per syringe; when reimbursed, 12,80 €, or 8,50 € with increased reimbursement.
  • All three products need a prescription. According to vaccination-info.be, pharmacists may prescribe and administer the flu and COVID-19 vaccines; no official page consulted lists RSV among them.

RSV is prevented in three ways in Belgium, each with its own product, its own audience and its own reimbursement rules. The public prices below were read in the CBIP/BCFI directory on 10 October 2026; your pharmacy confirms the exact amount at the counter.

Two of these situations depend on the RSV season, whose dates change every year. The dates given in this guide for pregnancy and for babies hold for the 2026-2027 season only: check the current season before making an appointment.

RSV vaccine from 60: who is it recommended for?

The reference text is advice 9837 of the Superior Health Council, published on 19 December 2024 and available in English only. It updates advice 9725 of September 2023.

It covers people aged 60 and over with at least one risk factor, immunodeficient patients, people living in nursing homes, and everyone aged 75 and over, especially those with a risk factor. The Council lists the following risk factors.

  • Immunodeficiency
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Severe obesity (BMI of 40 or more)
  • Chronic respiratory disease: COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung diseases, chronic respiratory failure
  • Current smoker
  • Chronic heart failure, coronary artery disease
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke

The schedule is a single intramuscular injection. The Council does not recommend a booster as of its advice, and CBIP/BCFI notes that the protection given by one dose lasts 2 to 3 years. September and October are the preferred months to be vaccinated, although vaccination remains possible all year round.

Two vaccines appear in the CBIP/BCFI directory: Arexvy (GSK) and Abrysvo (Pfizer). According to its summary of their product information, both are licensed for adults from 18. CBIP/BCFI did note, as at 28 April 2025, that the Council had not yet issued advice on RSV vaccination of young adults.

On the benefit, CBIP/BCFI states that, in people over 60, relative protection against (severe) lower respiratory tract disease caused by RSV ranged from 67 to 94 % in the studies, but that the absolute benefit was limited. It also reports signs of a slight increase in the risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Your doctor is the right person to talk this through with.

According to the Council, both vaccines can be given at the same time as the flu vaccine, with numerically lower titres whose clinical relevance is unknown. For Arexvy, its December 2024 advice states that giving it with COVID-19 and pneumococcal vaccines had not been studied. The Flemish authorities, for their part, write that these vaccines can safely be given at the same time.

Is the RSV vaccine reimbursed at 60, 65 or 75?

Recommended does not mean reimbursed. CBIP/BCFI points out that the Council does not take the cost of vaccination into account, and that some vaccines it recommends for older patients are not reimbursed. The Flemish authorities also write that the reimbursement conditions are not quite the same as the groups for whom vaccination is recommended.

For adults only Arexvy is reimbursed, in category b, chapter IV (§ 13470000), with prior control. You must be 65 or over, never have had this vaccine or have had it more than three years ago, and either live in an institution or live at home with at least one of the conditions listed by INAMI/RIZIV. Abrysvo is reimbursed during pregnancy only.

Institution is meant broadly (our translation of the rule text): nursing and care home, convalescent home, short-stay centre, day-care or day-nursing centre, service flat or another form of institution.

A healthy 75-year-old living at home is among the groups the Council recommends, but is not reimbursed and pays the public price.

The request goes through your doctor, who completes a request form and sends it to your mutuality’s advisory doctor before the vaccination. The approval is valid for 12 months at most and covers one pack. With that approval you pay 12,80 €, or 8,50 € with increased reimbursement, instead of 191,84 €.

CBIP/BCFI announced the reimbursement of Arexvy in August 2025. According to the Flemish Departement Zorg, reimbursement has been possible since 1 August 2025; the CBIP/BCFI directory gives the same date as its situation date. No Community makes an RSV vaccine available free of charge to adults.

RSV vaccine in pregnancy in 2026-2027: which weeks, which conditions?

The maternal vaccine is Abrysvo. It is given to the mother to protect the baby: CBIP/BCFI calls it passive immunisation of the infant. Advice 9760 of the Superior Health Council (December 2023) names weeks 28 to 36 of pregnancy as the preferred window, while the European licence starts at 24 weeks. INAMI/RIZIV reimburses between weeks 28 and 36.

The second condition is the season: reimbursement applies when the delivery is expected during the RSV season. The official sources do not all give the same period, and none should be read as the single rule. Your gynaecologist or your GP confirms whether you meet the conditions.

Official sourceExpected delivery
Superior Health Council, advice 9760Between early September and the end of March

Flanders (Departement Zorg)During the RSV season, from early October to the end of March

For a birth expected between 1 February 2027 and the end of the season, the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles points to the antibody given to the baby rather than the maternal vaccine. The Council also prefers the antibody where there is a risk of preterm delivery, where the mother is immunosuppressed or where placental transfer is reduced.

Reimbursement has existed since 1 January 2025, in category b, chapter IV (§ 13200000). The prescribing doctor completes a request form; the advisory doctor’s approval is valid for 36 weeks at most and covers one pack per pregnancy. You then pay 12,80 €, or 8,50 € with increased reimbursement.

Leave at least two weeks between the pertussis vaccine and the RSV vaccine: the Council, CBIP/BCFI and the Flemish authorities all three recommend it. The flu vaccine, on the other hand, can be given at the same time.

CBIP/BCFI gives a protection rate of 51 % for all infections and 69 % for severe infections. It adds that more data must be collected on safety, in particular on the incidence of premature births; one recent observational study, with vaccination between weeks 32 and 36, did not show an increased risk.

Vaccine for the mother or antibody for the baby: the Council leaves the choice of product open, and in principle only one of the two options is needed. This guide describes the two official routes without saying which one suits you: that is a decision to take with your doctor.

Beyfortus for babies: who gets it in the 2026-2027 season?

Beyfortus (nirsevimab) is not a vaccine: it is a monoclonal antibody, for which a single administration per season is recommended, with an exception after heart surgery. The dose is 50 mg for an infant under 5 kg and 100 mg from 5 kg. According to vaccination-info.be, it protects for about 5 to 6 months.

Beyfortus is not given to every baby at birth: it all depends on whether the mother was vaccinated, on prematurity and on the date of birth. The Council recommends it for babies whose mother was not vaccinated, for babies born within two weeks of the maternal vaccine and for preterm babies born before 30 weeks.

Reimbursement follows three INAMI/RIZIV rules. Preterm babies born before 36 weeks are covered if they are under 13 months old, for their first season. Babies born at 36 weeks or later are covered too, provided the mother was not vaccinated, except in specific cases set out in the Council’s latest advice. A third rule covers certain vulnerable children, after heart surgery or during a second season, up to 24 months.

On prematurity, the two texts do not give the same threshold. The Superior Health Council recommends the antibody for babies "born prematurely (< 30 w)". The INAMI/RIZIV rule has its own paragraph for preterm babies with a gestational age under 36 weeks ("< 36 semaines" in the French rule text), which does not mention the mother’s vaccination. Neither threshold should be read as the single rule: your doctor checks your baby’s situation.

The timing depends on the date of birth and on the season, which INAMI/RIZIV ties to Sciensano’s dates. According to the professional site of vaccination-info.be, the 2025-2026 season was declared over on 15 March 2026 and the 2026-2027 season officially starts on 1 October 2026. The end date is not known yet.

The baby’s situationWhenWhere and how
Born between 16 March and 30 September 2026Between 1 September and 31 October 2026GP, paediatrician or ONE consultation, after prescription
Born during the 2026-2027 seasonFrom the first days of lifeAt the maternity ward, or right after the stay at the GP or paediatrician
Mother vaccinated during pregnancyIn principle no antibodySpecific cases listed by the Council: birth within two weeks of the vaccine; immunocompromised mother or reduced placental antibody transfer; high-risk infant whose mother was vaccinated at the end of the season (between January and March); cardiopulmonary bypass or neonatal blood exchange
Baby born pretermTwo thresholds depending on the sourceCouncil: under 30 weeks. INAMI/RIZIV: its own paragraph for preterm babies under 36 weeks, which does not mention the mother’s vaccination

These dates come from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles and ONE. For the catch-up of babies born before the season, vaccination-info.be states that INAMI/RIZIV reimburses the antibody only until October. On 10 October 2026 the Flemish page still showed the previous season’s date (born from 19 February 2025): in Flanders, ask your doctor which rule applies.

In every case the prescribing doctor first requests the advisory doctor’s approval, valid for 3 months at most. According to ONE, the cost for parents is then 8,50 € or 12,80 €. The Flemish authorities point out that this immunisation is not part of the basic vaccination schedule and is not free, but that it is reimbursed.

In Flanders, Kind en Gezin does not prescribe or give Beyfortus at its consultations, and the CLB (which vaccinates through schools in Flanders) does not offer it either: you need a prescription from your GP or paediatrician. On the French-speaking side, ONE names its consultation among the places where the catch-up can be done, after prescription.

Beyfortus is not given to every baby at birth: it all depends on whether the mother was vaccinated, on prematurity and on the date of birth.

Price of the RSV vaccine and of Beyfortus in Belgium in 2026

The public prices below come from the price tables of the CBIP/BCFI directory, consulted on 10 October 2026, for the public pharmacy. The co-payments come from the INAMI/RIZIV reimbursement rules as CBIP/BCFI reproduces them. Your pharmacy confirms the exact amount at the counter.

ProductPackPublic priceIf reimbursement is granted
Arexvy (GSK)1 dose, 2 vials191,84 €12,80 €, or 8,50 € with increased reimbursement (65 and over, under conditions)
Abrysvo (Pfizer)1 dose, vial and prefilled syringe186,36 €12,80 €, or 8,50 € (pregnancy only)
Beyfortus 50 mg (Sanofi Belgium)1 prefilled syringe of 0,5 ml613,86 €12,80 €, or 8,50 €
Beyfortus 100 mg (Sanofi Belgium)1 prefilled syringe of 1 ml613,86 €12,80 €, or 8,50 €

Without an approval for reimbursement you pay the public price. The same co-payment comes back everywhere because 12,80 € and 8,50 € have been, since 1 January 2026, the maximum amounts a patient pays for a category b medicine. INAMI/RIZIV states that these amounts can be indexed every year.

Older amounts still circulate. CBIP/BCFI itself listed 777,58 € per syringe of Beyfortus as at 20 September 2025, and on 10 October 2026 the Flemish RSV page still showed old prices and old co-payments. No official page explains the drop in the price of Beyfortus.

Several mutualities publish a general yearly allowance for vaccines (pages consulted on 10 October 2026): up to 75 € a year with at most 15 € per item at the Mutualité chrétienne, up to 35 € at Partenamut, Mutualia and La Mutualité Neutre, 50 % of the price paid with a maximum of 30 € at the Mutualité Libérale. Helan caps it at 25 € and excludes vaccines reimbursed by the compulsory insurance.

Solidaris Wallonie shows two figures on the same page, 25 € a year and up to 30 €. None of these pages names Arexvy, Abrysvo or Beyfortus: ask your mutuality whether the product is covered before you count on it.

The price a maternity ward or hospital charges for Beyfortus does not appear on any official page consulted: only the public-pharmacy price and the co-payment are published.

Where to get the RSV vaccine, and who may prescribe it?

All three products are dispensed on prescription. According to vaccination-info.be, pharmacists may prescribe and administer the flu and COVID-19 vaccines; no official page consulted lists RSV among them. Its professional site adds that this role may be widened in the future.

The prescribing doctor also completes the reimbursement request, which goes to the advisory doctor before the vaccination. The table below sets out what the official pages say for each situation.

SituationPrescriptionWhere to go
AdultA doctor, who also sends the request to the advisory doctor if you meet the conditionsVaccine bought at the pharmacy, then injected by the doctor; a nurse may inject a vaccine prescribed by a doctor

Baby born before the season, in Flanders (birth-date cut-off for 2026-2027 not published)The GP or paediatrician, with the advisory doctor’s approvalNot offered by Kind en Gezin or the CLB

Midwives may prescribe and administer certain vaccines to pregnant women on their own authority. For the pregnancy vaccinations against pertussis, RSV and flu, the Flemish Departement Zorg writes that you can go to your GP, gynaecologist or midwife. Its page does not say who prescribes the vaccine or who signs the reimbursement request.

No official page consulted says whether a midwife may prescribe Abrysvo, or whether anyone other than the prescribing doctor may sign the reimbursement request. Put the question to your midwife or your gynaecologist.

For adults, the Flemish authorities write: if you are unsure whether you qualify, ask your doctor or pharmacist. The product is dispensed at the pharmacy on prescription; for pharmacists, the official pages consulted mention only prescribing and administering the flu and COVID-19 vaccines.

According to vaccination-info.be, pharmacists may prescribe and administer the flu and COVID-19 vaccines; no official page consulted lists RSV among them.

Frequently asked questions

What does the RSV vaccine cost in Belgium in 2026?

In the CBIP/BCFI directory consulted on 10 October 2026, Arexvy costs 191,84 € and Abrysvo 186,36 €. When INAMI/RIZIV reimburses, you pay 12,80 €, or 8,50 € with increased reimbursement. Your pharmacy confirms the exact amount at the counter.

Is the RSV vaccine reimbursed from 60 or 65?

Not at 60. INAMI/RIZIV reimburses Arexvy from 65, only if you have never had this vaccine or had it more than three years ago, and if you live in an institution or have one of the conditions on its list, after approval by the advisory doctor. Age alone is not enough, even at 75.

How much does Beyfortus cost in Belgium?

The public price is 613,86 € per syringe, for 50 mg and 100 mg alike, at CBIP/BCFI on 10 October 2026. When reimbursement is granted, ONE states a cost of 8,50 € or 12,80 € for parents. The price a maternity ward charges does not appear on any official page consulted.

In which weeks of pregnancy is the RSV vaccine given?

INAMI/RIZIV reimburses it between weeks 28 and 36, if the delivery is expected during the RSV season. The delivery period differs from one official source to another: your gynaecologist or GP confirms whether you qualify. Leave at least two weeks between this vaccine and the pertussis vaccine.

Does my baby get Beyfortus if I was vaccinated during pregnancy?

In principle no: only one of the two options is needed, and for babies born at 36 weeks or later INAMI/RIZIV requires that the mother was not vaccinated. The Superior Health Council allows exceptions, such as a birth within two weeks of the vaccine or before 30 weeks of pregnancy; the INAMI/RIZIV paragraph for preterm babies under 36 weeks does not mention the mother’s vaccination. Your doctor checks your situation.

Can the pharmacist vaccinate me against RSV?

No. According to vaccination-info.be, pharmacists may prescribe and administer the flu and COVID-19 vaccines; no official page consulted lists RSV among them. The RSV vaccine needs a doctor’s prescription; you then buy it at the pharmacy.
