Which vaccines for your destination?
Only one vaccine can be required to enter a country, yellow fever, and only for certain destinations: all the others are recommended, not compulsory. The travel vaccine checker covers more than 50 destinations departing from Belgium, based on the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp, and shows for each one what is recommended, what is worth considering, and what can be required on arrival.
Every country has its own page, with the vaccines, the malaria risk and the lead times: Thailand, India, Brazil, Kenya, Senegal, Indonesia or Morocco. Malaria itself is not prevented by a vaccine for travellers, but by prescription tablets and mosquito-bite protection.
How long before departure?
Book 6 to 8 weeks before departure, 4 at the very least, and earlier if your health is fragile or if the schedule runs over several weeks, as it does for hepatitis B. Yellow fever has its own rules: it can only be given at an approved vaccination centre, around thirty of them in Belgium, and at least 10 days before arrival. The international certificate has been valid for life since 11 July 2016. Travel vaccines from Belgium and the yellow fever vaccine explain the lead times and the exceptions.
That appointment is not only about exotic vaccines. It is also the moment to check that your routine ones are current, dTpa, polio and MMR, since they come back for almost every destination in the tool. Wanda, the free site of the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp, also exists as an app and is the source behind these pages; check it again shortly before you leave, because requirements change.
Reimbursement, and the proofs to keep
Travel vaccines are generally not reimbursed, but your health insurer often offers a benefit, frequently €25 to €35 a year: ask your pharmacist for the BVAC attestation to claim it. Then keep the proofs, because a yellow fever certificate or a dTpa booster will serve you again on the next trip. Finding your vaccination history in Belgium explains where they are recorded, and the digital vaccination record how to keep them within reach.
Where does emmunity fit in?
emmunity is a family vaccination record app still being built: it is not downloadable yet, and these pages stay indicative, an approved travel clinic always has the last word on your itinerary. The aim is to keep your travel proofs and reminders in one place, ready for every departure, for you and for your children. Travelling with children, see childhood vaccines as well; pregnant, vaccines and pregnancy sets out what is advised against.
